Hether - Sticky Thumb (2021)
For his first pick of a 2021 album, Shane chooses "Sticky Thumb," an album by 25 year old Lo-Fi artist Paul Castelluzzo, who creates music under the name "Hether." Paul grew up playing Jazz and listening to T. Rex, Beach Boys, Velvet Underground, and The Beatles. Shane and Trevor definitely hear a 60's influence amidst layers of simmering and floating synthesizers and bedroom acoustic guitar. "Sticky Thumb" is intentionally unpolished as Paul set out to let creation and discovery happen in the moment with many of these songs being created in one take. The lyrics aren't spelled out clearly but are drenched in adolescent nostalgia for the mid-twenties artist with references to surfboards, cartoons, and blue canvas shoes. Trevor and Shane had fun unpacking these songs and are looking forward to seeing what Hether creates next.
