Lana Del Rey - Chemtrails Over The Country Club (2021)

For his next 2021 pick, Shane selects Lana Del Rey's 7th studio album, "Chemtrails Over the Country Club." Trevor and Shane both know Lana Del Rey's music as an influential part of pop culture, but neither had ever taken the time to fully absorb one of her albums. Chemtrails detours some from Lana's prior work with a more stripped down aesthetic, sprawling piano, and subtle production that gives a more intimate experience than the pop elements she is known for. Lyrically, this album explores themes of escapism and disillusionment with the music industry and fame draped in a nostalgia for a simpler time when all that mattered was 6 chords and a wild heart. Though the details of the underbelly of the music industry are dark and apparent, Lana channels the strength of the creative women in music that have danced this dance longer than she has and perhaps finds a way to transcend it.
